Downtown's Holiday Season Already Started at the West End of Main Street

October 22, 2026

City crews started hanging holiday lights on Main Street on Monday, Oct. 12. The city's traffic notice for that week warned of full block closures on the 200 and 300 blocks as crews work east over three weeks. So the season you'll see on Main through December is already being wired, one block at a time, starting at the end of downtown closest to 2nd Street.

From here to the first weekend of December, downtown's calendar comes down to four Saturdays, and all of them happen within a few blocks of each other. The 300 block and the 4th + Main Plaza host most of it. Every event lands on a weekend, when downtown's public parking is free all day.

The Crew Is Moving East Through Early November

The City of Grand Junction's traffic notice for the week of Oct. 12, 2026 says full block closures will start at the west end of Main and move east. Three weeks from that Monday puts the end of the work around the first days of November. Until then, a block that was open on Tuesday may be closed on Thursday as the trucks move up the street.

The same notice lists a second project around downtown's south edge. CDOT's Ute and Pitkin improvements have 4th Street down to one lane between Colorado and Pitkin avenues, and 5th Street down to one lane between South and Colorado avenues. Ute and Pitkin also have single-lane and shoulder closures between 3rd and 6th streets. Business and residential access stays open, and so do alley parking and access. If you usually reach Main from the south on 4th or 5th, give yourself a few extra minutes this fall, crew or no crew.

Four Saturdays, One Short Stretch of Main

Date Event Where Time Presenter or host
Sat., Oct. 24 Downtown Spooktacular Main Street 4 to 6 p.m. Credit Union of Colorado
Sat., Nov. 7 Veterans Day Parade & Block Party 300 block of Main Block party from 11:30 a.m., parade at 2 p.m. Hosted by Steadfast Valor Foundation
Sat., Nov. 21 Downtown Tree Lighting 4th + Main Plaza 5 to 7 p.m. Enstrom Candies
Sat., Dec. 5 Parade of Lights Along Main Street 5 p.m. Bank of Colorado

Here's what the table shows: the Veterans Day block party sits on the 300 block, between 3rd and 4th, and the Tree Lighting is at the corner just past it. Across these four Saturdays, the same few hundred feet of Main get most of the use.

Oct. 24 Is the Fullest Saturday on the Calendar

Downtown Spooktacular runs from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, with trick-or-treating, activities, and performances. Downtown Grand Junction's event page says Main Street will close for safety. It points visitors to weekend parking, which is free all day. Credit Union of Colorado is the presenting sponsor. Jolley Smiles, Renewal by Andersen, Highline Internet, and Veritas also appear among the sponsors.

The same evening, West Winds Gallery holds the opening reception for "Quiet Turnings," with live music from the Monumental Jazz Trio. The gallery is at 504 Main St., on the 500 block just past the 4th + Main Plaza. If you're downtown with kids for trick-or-treating, one parking spot can easily cover both stops.

Oct. 24 also falls inside the light crew's three-week run, which started Oct. 12. Add a Main Street closure for Spooktacular, and that Saturday is the one most likely to send you around the block.

The 300 Block Belongs to Veterans Day on Nov. 7

The Steadfast Valor Foundation's 2026 Veterans Day Parade & Block Party fills Main between 3rd and 4th streets. The foundation describes veteran groups, businesses, nonprofits, community groups, family activities, interactive exhibits, food vendors, and entertainment. The parade starts at 2 p.m., and the event is free.

The two organizers list slightly different hours. Downtown Grand Junction's listing has the block party running 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The foundation's own page says 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. If you're planning a late-afternoon stop, the foundation's page is the one to check that morning.

The event's theme this year is "250 Years Defending Freedom." It's a Saturday, so the free weekend parking applies here too.

Nov. 21 Is When the Crew's Work Gets Switched On

By the third Saturday in November, the strands the city crew put up in October have been hanging dark for a few weeks. The Downtown Tree Lighting at the 4th + Main Plaza changes that. From 5 to 7 p.m., Santa lights the tree and the Main Street lights, then visits with children. Enstrom Candies is the presenting sponsor.

The plaza sits at the east end of the 300 block, the same block that held the Veterans Day party two weeks earlier. Living or working within walking distance of 4th and Main means both events are a short walk, with no parking to find.

One scheduling note: Downtown Grand Junction's general holiday page still shows older dates carried over from a previous season: a Saturday, Nov. 23 tree lighting and a Saturday, Dec. 7 parade. The individual event pages carry the 2026 dates of Nov. 21 and Dec. 5. If a friend sends you the wrong date, that page is probably where they got it.

Dec. 5 Is the One Saturday When Parking Takes Planning

On the first three Saturdays, free weekend parking does most of the work for you. The Parade of Lights at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 is different. The event page says Main Street parking is prohibited along the parade route starting at 2 p.m. It recommends side streets or the garage at 4th and Rood. One catch: the page lists the parade for Dec. 5, but its parking notice still reads "Dec. 6." Check that notice again in early December before you count on a Main Street spot that afternoon.

Bank of Colorado is the presenting sponsor, with Groundworks and Renewal by Andersen also listed. Spectators line Main Street for the parade.

Entries are capped. The event page set registration to open at noon on Oct. 19, first-come, first-served, with room for 80 entries. If your business, club, or neighborhood group has talked about putting a float in, those 80 spots go in the order entries arrive.

Between the Saturdays, Main Street Has New Things to Look At

The weekdays and Friday evenings between these events are quieter, and there's more on the street than there was in September.

The 2026/27 Art on the Corner sculptures went up on Saturday, Oct. 3. Downtown Grand Junction's Business Improvement District minutes from Aug. 27 say the program received 104 submissions from 52 artists. Curator Pavia Justinian picked 20, about one in five, and added two sculptures by Colorado Mesa University students. The Downtown Art Festival listing placed that weekend's Artists Expo on Main between 3rd and 7th streets. That puts the new pieces in your path any time you walk to a Saturday event this fall. After dark on Nov. 21, they'll be lit by the new strands overhead.

West Winds Gallery holds a First Friday reception for "Quiet Turnings" on Nov. 6 from 5 to 8 p.m., the night before the Veterans Day block party. The exhibition runs through Nov. 24.

On the same 500 block, the former Brown Cycles building at 549–555 Main St. is being renovated. The Business Times reported on Oct. 6 that Rockslide Brew Pub owner Uwe Kirch plans Valle di Sera there. It will be an international-theme restaurant in the back half of 555 Main, with a dining room of 50 to 60 seats. Bella Balsamic & The Pressed Olive stays in the front. The report didn't give an opening date. For now, what you'll see on your walk between events is a renovation, not a restaurant.

Downtown homes near Main get the holiday season right outside the door, and the closures that come with it.
